Massive colony ship flees war on home world, looking for a new planet to call home. The entire history was on the one ship, following the colonists making their way to their new home. As an experiment it was interesting, but such a tight setting defeats a lot of the fun of Microscope. Because everything was set on the one colony ship, once we established facts about the ship (empaths everywhere, emotion engines) there was no way to escape those things and do something unrelated. We talked about the beginning about making the ship "really, really, really big" to counteract that effect, but in play it never worked out. The history became very compressed: all about the empaths. We did have some good scenes (I treasure the look on Shuo's face when the Speaker's wife was commending his mistress for doing such a good job), but overall I think we would have been better off with more latitude in the history. |
