What We Played: The Fall of Communism (Fiasco)

Players: Pat, Sev, Jonathan and Sam.

I'd just picked up the Fiasco Companion and was interested in trying out Fiasco with a serious tone using the soft tilt and aftermath options. Those of us that'd played Fiasco before were skeptical whether we could keep the story from turning into a wacky train wreck, as Fiasco is historically so good at. In the end, the game wasn't exactly serious, it was still fun. I do feel like we managed to resist some of the more outlandish possibilities.

Here's a character run down:

Jake Miller (Pat): A 40-something bar manager and college drop out. Jake makes his real money fixing grades and selling plagiarized term papers to desperate students. He maintains a casual sexual relationship with his young bartender...

Eagdyth Prentiss (Sam): A perpetual graduate who possesses all the intelligence and none of the desire to finish school. She often juggles several relationships simultaneously, although it is not uncommon for her partners to become singularly fixated on her. For example, the passionate neo-Marxist Elison who recently died from a fall off the West Campus Bridge. Not to mention...

Dr. V. Devin Brinksford, PHD. (Jonathan): A tenured linguistics professor and head of the campus neo-Marxism club. Brinksford has lately become enamored with his student Eagdyth. Although he generally exhibits a meek temperament, he is apparently capable of violent flares of jealousy. Just ask poor Elison, or perhaps you'd get a better answer from...

Niles (Sev): A fervent, if naive member of the neo-Marxist club. Niles' obsession with Marxism does little to endear himself to the student population and their misguided Capitalist leanings. The only place Niles feels at home is with his fellow neo-Marxists, so you can imagine his horror when he hears of Elison's death. Where the other members saw a tragedy, Niles smelled foul play. Just because he's paranoid doesn't mean he's not onto something.
