Undone by Crystallizing Fluid (The Final Voyage of the Selene)

In the far future, humanity has spread through the galaxy, forming a federation with other races. As our story opens, the Selene, a cargo ship, is preparing for a regular run to from Selveria Earth. People of many races are traveling aboard, including an arachnid race known as the Spiders, a hairless bipedal race known as Humans; and a large six-armed androgynous race known as Androsynth.

On board are Lt. Karazin (human), who is escorting two Androsynth prisoners, the family of a former officer of his who he killed after it was found to be smuggling illegal weapons; Prof. Carris (human), who is suspiciously interested in space propulsion for a bioengineer; Chief Eng. Pryce (androsynth), who's addicted to the narcotic crystallizing fluid the ship's drive relies on; Dr. Tsien (human), who contracted a highly contagious pathogen on Selveria and constantly wears gloves and other personal protective equipment; and the Spider Juve Mahler, a stowaway who's seeking a better life on Earth.

Meeting Juve in the lunchroom, Lt. Karazin takes her into his confidence as his eyes and ears; she is ideal for this purpose as she can easily traverse the ship's regulation crawlable-size ventilation ducts, and witnesses many future events from them. Lt. Karazin soon takes pressure from both the Doctor and the Engineer over how he's treating his prisoners, but he defends his turf. The Engineer in particular wishes to speak with the prisoners privately, but he refuses. Meeting with Eng. Pryce, Prof. Carris presses it for details of the star drive, but it refuses.

Karazin finds his prisoners have been brutally murdered; this despite the fact that the ship's security system grants only him access to the brig. Dr. Tsien takes a brain scan from one of the corpses, which may reveal what it witnessed in its last moments of life.

Later, in a moment of penitence, the Doctor slips a printout under Prof. Carris's door, documenting a botched heart surgery which killed his granddaughter on which she was the operating surgeon. She then goes to confront Eng. Pryce; she reveals that she knows it is responsible for the murder of the prisoners; she will keep the secret if Pryce reroutes the ship to another planet, but it refuses.

Prof. Carris finds Eng. Pryce wracked with guilt and defensive about the ship's systems. He offers it a chocolate, which it accepts. It loses consciousness, and he locks it in a closet; it comes to and escapes, since it had disabled the ship's security systems. It decides he knows too much, and chases him to engineering, where it tries to kill him. He overpowers it; desperate for another fix, it drains the star drive of sustaining fluid, and overdoses.

Dr. Tsien confronts the Professor over not having reacted to her confessional printout; she demands that professor end her life, offering knife and stun-gun, but he declines, and off-handedly forgives her. Later the Lt. finds Dr. Tsien in her quarters, despondent. They both get to drinking, and he suddenly kisses her, professing his love. She is horrified that he may have just exposed himself to her infection; she jams a hypodermic needle of prophylactic in his arm and ejects him from her quarters. As they're meeting, alarms start going off.

When it comes to, Eng. Pryce finds Juve has restrained it with webbing. She plaintively asks why it murdered the prisoners, and attacked the professor. It confesses to depleting the star drive; they will not be able to reach Earth. She agrees to release it, and gives it a chance to do the right thing. It stumbles to an engineering panel and orders a red alert and evacuation.

Juve, Karazin, Carris and Pryce make it to the lifeboats. The professor rests easy knowing he has passed on the alien parasite that was controlling him to the Engineer via the chocolate he offered it. Pryce tried to go down with the ship, but someone hustled it into a lifeboat; it must live with what it's done. Rather than escape, Dr. Tsien decides to end her suffering, and strips herself of her personal protective equipment for the first time in ages before stepping out of an airlock.

In the aftermath, Juve tries to spread the word about Pryce's responsibility for the catastrophe, but no one will listen to the word of a Spider who's only 3. (That's adolescent in Spider years!) In the end Karazin runs into Juve in New York, where they enjoy genuine New York pizza just like they'd talked about; Juve tells Karazin of Pryce's involvement, and he takes vengeance.

Thanks for the write-up Kerne! :) An accurate summary of what happened on the last voyage of the Selene.

Was cool having people play inhuman races this time, that was a first for me! I thought there were some interesting takes on the Roles and Agendas. I think sharing the answers to those questions allowed as part of introducing the characters is a good idea. I've had a pretty good time playing this. There is a definite structure but it has replayability I think. Looking forward to playing it more.

Was a good time around the table too! Thanks to Tim, Awesome Tim, Kerne, and Davis for a very interesting journey.

Thanks for leading us on the journey, Dani! (And I second thanking you, Kerne, for this write-up.) I would like to make clear to any reading this that might have delusions to the contrary, that I am not Awesome Tim. That honor is reserved for another.

I liked this game and how it gives a lot of structure without actually telling you what to do or spelling out exactly what is going to happen.
